10 reasons why you do not want a Parrot
10 reasons why you do not want a Parrot

Why this page?
Because many, many parrots end up abandoned in bird rescues for these reasons...

1. They are extremely demanding on your time. If you can't spend an absolute minimum of 3 hours a day, every single day (not just when you feel like it), with your parrot out of its cage and with you, you are subjecting that poor bird to a life of misery. It is very likely you will end up with a very noisy complaining parrot and it may even start plucking all of its feathers out through boredom.

2. Many parrots are very noisy naturally. Will your neighbors start complaining? Will it drive you crazy? Parrots do not sing, they screech ear piercingly loud and although a happy parrot will do it less, it will still do it. An unhappy one, and you'd better get ear plugs!

3. He/she will most likely never talk. Its a misdemeanor that all parrots talk, in fact, very few do. You see the one in a million on You Tube that do talk but not all the others that don't.

4. They are messy, messy, messy birds! Parrots are food scatterers in the wild. They eat about 10% of anything that goes their beak, while the other 90% is scattered around the forest floor, or in your case, your clean living room floor! Incidentally, that is one reason parrots are so very important in the wild, they supply all the forest floor dwellers with their meals and spread nuts and seeds to replenish forest growth.

5. If you thought a parrot was expensive to buy, wait 'till you find out how expensive it is to keep! Your food bills will sky rocket, with all that exotic fruit and nuts they need to remain healthy. Then there's the never ending supply of toys you'll need to buy them to keep them content, which they will get through in no time. Add to that the cost of the cage, the vet bills etc.

6. You WILL get bitten. Don't believe anyone who tells you they haven't had blood drawn. Parrots bite! Even the tamest of them will catch you off guard on occasions. Correction, its more likely to happen when you catch them off guard. Never forget, these are wild animals. They have not been domesticated for thousands of years like cats and dogs, they have only really been kept in large numbers since the 1960s, and that's not even one generation of parrots yet. Remember, they live 50 or more years.

7. That brings us onto their life span. Do you really want a destructive creature around your house that acts like a 3 year old child for the rest of your life? They destroy everything in sight. Don't ever underestimate that. What? Your computer just crashed? Better check that bitten through cable. Your lovely furniture is not worth a dime anymore? Don't say I didn't warn ya!

8. Do you or a member of your family have allergies? All parrots give off dander and Cockatoos give off a lot of dander, which many people are allergic to.

9. Do you have cats or dogs? Remember cats and dogs instinctively kill birds! You may discover your sweet kitty or cuddly doggie, are not quite as tame as you always thought they were.

10. If you ever plan to move to or retire to a different country, you had better read this. You are far more likely to have to leave the love of your life behind, than be able to take him.
